Admiral Krishna Swaminathan assumed charge as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy on Sunday (May 31, 2026), succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi. Admiral Tripathi retired after 41 years of service.

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. He is a Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist and has served in numerous operational, staff, and training appointments throughout his distinguished career spanning nearly four decades. Admiral Swaminathan’s naval commands have included the Guided Missile Vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, the Guided Missile Corvette INS Kulish, the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mysore, and the Aircraft Carrier INS Vikramaditya.

Following his promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral, Krishna Swaminathan served as the Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command Headquarters in Kochi. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Flag Officer (Sea Training) and later assumed command of the Indian Navy’s most powerful formation—the Western Fleet. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and as the Offshore Security and Defence Advisor to the Government of India.

Upon his promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral, Krishna Swaminathan held the appointments of Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, and at Naval Headquarters, served as the Controller of Personnel Services, Chief of Personnel, and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. Prior to assuming the charge of the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Swaminathan served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the prestigious Western Naval Command.

He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla), the Joint Services Command and Staff College (Shrivenham) in the United Kingdom, the Naval War College (Karanja), and the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His academic qualifications include a B.Sc. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), an M.Sc. in Telecommunications from the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Kochi), an M.A. in Defence Studies from King’s College (London), an M.Phil. in Strategic Studies from the University of Mumbai, and a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Mumbai.

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.
