Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel conferred the rank of Honorary General of the Nepal Army upon India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Dhiraj Seth, during an investiture ceremony. The ceremony was held on Tuesday at Sheetal Niwas, the President’s official residence in Kathmandu. This event is part of a long-standing military tradition between India and Nepal, wherein both nations honor each other’s Army Chiefs by conferring upon them the rank of General in their respective armies.

Nepal’s Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, India’s Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava, and senior officials from the Nepal Army and the Government of Nepal were present at the ceremony. General Seth reached the Himalayan nation on an official visit on Sunday at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart, General Ashok Raj Sigdel.

The tradition of conferring this honorary rank began in 1950, under which Nepal and India grant the honorary rank of General to each other’s Army Chiefs.

General Dhiraj Seth also met with General Sigdel at the Nepal Army Headquarters; the two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and ways to strengthen bilateral military ties. General Seth also met Ambassador Naveen Srivastava at the Indian Embassy, where they discussed measures to further bolster the comprehensive relationship between New Delhi and Kathmandu.

General Seth also handed over military and medical equipment to the Nepal Army. He planted a sapling at the Nepal Army Headquarters complex and inspected a Guard of Honour.
