The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has exposed the inside stories about the sexual abuse in the prestigious institute of the British Army.
Located in Harrogate, this military institution is nearly 80 years old and trains boys and girls aged 16 to 17.5 to become soldiers. It offers two types of courses—lasting 49 weeks and 23 weeks—and serves as the largest military center in Britain for training recruits under the age of 19.
Four young women who attended courses there told the BBC that they were subjected to sexual abuse and harassment at the Army training college for teenagers; one woman even alleged that several fellow junior soldiers raped her over the course of several hours. All these women attended the Army Foundation College (AFC) within the last five years and stated that the incidents occurred when they were 17 years old.
The young women describe a dangerous environment of misogyny and sexual violence at the college. They are all speaking openly about these matters for the first time. One young woman made a harrowing disclosure about the sexual violence she endured, stating that she had been reduced to the state of a mere piece of meat.
Meanwhile, a British Army spokesperson described the reports as “deeply concerning and serious.”
A BBC report said : according to information obtained under ‘Freedom of Information’ requests, North Yorkshire Police received 16 reports of college-related sexual offenses in the year leading up to June. These criminal cases included allegations of indecent exposure, voyeurism, and sexual harassment. No information was provided regarding whether any legal action or prosecution resulted from these incidents.
Separately, data from the UK Ministry of Defence indicates that a total of 176 complaints regarding inappropriate sexual behavior at the college were recorded between January 2018 and June 2025. Of these, 32 allegations were against permanent staff members, while 144 involved junior soldiers. An Army spokesperson stated, “There is absolutely no place for unacceptable or criminal behavior in our armed forces.”

The AFC was established in 1947. It is the largest military training center for individuals under the age of 19, serving as the destination for all 16-year-old recruits joining the Army. Located in Harrogate, the center currently houses 889 soldiers, including 70 female junior soldiers. The college plays a pivotal role in providing basic military training and preparing future leaders. It offers a blend of military training, personal development, and education for young people, equipping them with the essential skills needed to succeed in the armed forces and in life beyond the military.
Demand for an Independent Inquiry:
Calls for an independent inquiry into the Army training college for teenagers are mounting following allegations of rape and sexual exploitation involving female recruits. Various politicians, Members of Parliament, and individuals with military backgrounds have voiced this demand.
Police Statement:
North Yorkshire Police has issued a statement regarding the BBC report concerning the Army Foundation College in Harrogate.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said, “Reports of sexual abuse at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate are deeply concerning. North Yorkshire Police will continue to support victims and their families with sensitivity and will make every possible effort to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. While legal requirements to protect the lifelong anonymity of sexual offense victims prevent us from disclosing specific details of the investigation, it is important to emphasize that North Yorkshire Police will not tolerate sexual abuse.”
The police added, “We encourage victims to come forward and access the specialist support readily available to them, regardless of how long ago the offense occurred.”
