N.S. Raja Subramani is India’s third CDS. Prior to him, General Anil Chauhan and General Bipin Rawat served as India’s CDS. The 60-year-old (born July 21, 1965) N.S. Raja Subramani has previously served as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army. He was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Regiment of the Indian Army on December 14, 1985.
On July 1, 2024, Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani assumed the office of the 47th Vice Chief of Army Staff, a position that became vacant after General Upendra Dwivedi took over as the Chief of Army Staff. Following his retirement from active military service, the Government of India appointed NS Subramani as the Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat; he assumed this charge on September 1, 2025. The government appointed him as India’s CDS on May 9, 2026.
General Raja Subramani said that the Armed Forces have consistently demonstrated their professional competence and operational decision-making capabilities in safeguarding the nation’s interests, and remain fully committed to protecting India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also lauded the bravery and professional prowess of the soldiers, sailors, and air warriors, and gave an assurance that their training and welfare would remain his utmost priority.
Reiterating the Armed Forces’ commitment to the welfare of veterans and *Veer Naris* (war widows), he assured the citizens that the Armed Forces would continue to serve the nation with unwavering dedication, valor, honor, and professional excellence.
Earlier this morning, General Subramani was accorded a ‘Guard of Honour’ at the lawns of the South Block in New Delhi. He also paid tribute to the martyrs at the National War Memorial.
