Tashi Namgyal , a brave Ladakhi shepherd who first alerted the Indian Army about Pakistani’s intrusion in Kargil during 1999, has bid farewell to this world. He passed away at the age of 60 at his village in Aryan Valley yesterday.
Tashi Namgyal was the person due to whose wisdom and bravery shown 25 years ago, the Pakistani army could not enter India and fulfill its dangerous plans.
Calling him a patriot and a braveheart of Ladakh, the Fire and Fury Corps of Indian Army has paid tribute to Tashi Namgyal.
The Fire and Fury Corps has posted on X that the Corps pays tribute to Tashi Namgyal on his sudden demise. His invaluable contribution to the nation during Operation Vijay in 1999 will be inscribed in golden letters. We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.

Garkon village is on the Indo-Pakistan border in Ladakh. That was the day in 1999 when Tashi Namgyal had gone out to search for his yak which had got lost while grazing. During the search Tashi Namgyal saw infiltrators coming from the Pakistan side. He showed great intelligence, bravery & speed to quickly convey this information to the soldiers posted at the nearest army unit.
After this, the Indian Army fought those intruders and drove them away. This was the first incident of the fierce encounter of 1999 which led to the Kargil war.
