The Toronto Police Association (TPA), a police labour organisation of Canada, has taken an unprecedented step and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the proposal to amend the Criminal Code.

TPA has said in a statement that it has “lost faith” in Trudeau to “do the right thing for the right reasons”.

Angry with the proposed amendments in several laws, the police body wrote in a post on its handle on X that it is time to resign and leave these important public safety issues to someone else.

Anita Anand, a minister in the Justin Trudeau government, recently made public that the Canadian government is proposing several changes in view of the economic collapse of 2024. The proposed changes include amendments to the Criminal Code to ensure effective action against repeat offenders. These include stricter bail conditions when caught in cases of violent crimes such as auto theft and break-ins and intrusions and providing more powers to CBSA officers to inspect goods destined for export.
Anita Anand said that the amendments will ensure that violent and repeat offenders are held accountable. At the same time, the police union expressed displeasure and commented, “This is ridiculous. After nine years of doing nothing, you choose a time when your government is descending into chaos to pacify us with “proposals”? What a joke.”
Meanwhile, the Durham Regional Police Association expressed similar views. It said, “It’s time to elect a government that delivers much-needed changes instead of empty promises.”
