Bihar Governor and retired Indian Army Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain stopped the Guard Commander during a Guard of Honour ceremony to explain the correct way to issue commands while saluting. He also advised Nalanda’s Superintendent of Police (SP), Bharat Soni, to make improvements in this regard.

The incident happened during an event at Nalanda Open University, where Governor Syed Ata Hasnain was the chief guest. In accordance with protocol, a Bihar Police contingent presented a Guard of Honour to the Governor. A young officer was commanding the police contingent, but his pace in issuing instructions to the guard personnel was too rapid. Syed Ata Hasnain, himself a senior military officer, could not overlook this and pointed it out to the Guard Commander.

The Governor also called over Nalanda SP Bharat Soni, who was present at the venue, to explain the finer points of the salute. He emphasized that a commander should pause between words while issuing commands, there is no need to rush the process.

The issue of excessive speed and lack of clarity in the commander’s instructions—noted by the Bihar Governor during the Guard of Honour—is a mistake frequently observed across various uniformed organizations. Those unfamiliar with police or army protocols and terminology often fail to grasp what the Guard Commander is trying to convey amidst the rapid, shouted commands.
