Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Daljit Singh Chaudhary has been appointed Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). The Ministry of Personnel Ministry of the Central Government issued orders regarding his appointment on Friday. Shri Choudhary is currently posted as Special Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force.
Daljit Singh Chaudhary, a 1990 batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre will remain the chief of the SSB till November 30, 2025. He is Currently posted as Special Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
In the order related to the new appointment of IPS Daljeet, it has been said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as Director General of SSB for the period till November 30, 2025 i.e. the date of his retirement.
IPS Rashmi Shukla, who was the head of SSB till a few days ago, was sent to her cadre state Maharashtra. Then she was appointed the Director General of Maharashtra Police. Since then the post of Chief of SSB was vacant, on which Shri Choudhary has now been appointed.
Daljit Chaudhary, who held various important posts in Uttar Pradesh Police, has also served in other police organizations. Shri Chaudhary is not only a student of science, he has also studied law. Apart from various honours, IPS Daljit Singh Chaudhary has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry thrice.
What is SSB:
As the name suggests, Sashastra Seema Bal is for security in the border areas of India. It was formed in March 1963 as the Special Service Bureau. Most of its troops are deployed in the China and Nepal bordering area. SSB is also used for internal security job. . Its troops have also been involved in anti -infiltration and anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir. SSB is also deployed in areas affected by Naxal violence.
Following the recommendations of a Group of Ministers constituted to reform India’s national security system, the SSB was declared the Border Security Force and Lead Intelligence Agency (LIA) for the India-Nepal border (June, 2001) and 1751 Km. The task of border security was entrusted. Earlier, it was given the responsibility of 800 km of foreign border with 7 districts of Bihar apart from Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, 105.6 km of border area of West Bengal and 99 km of international border with Sikkim. In March 2004, the SSB was entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the 699 km long stretch of India-Bhutan border with the states of Sikkim-(32 km), West Bengal (183 km with 2 districts), Assam (267 km with 4 districts). Work was also assigned. Along with this, deployment was also made on the 217 km border bordering two districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Since then the name of SSB was changed to Sashastra Seema Bal.
Interestingly, SSB is the first border security force which has decided to create a women battalion. It is doing excellent work as a border security force on the India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders.
