According to doctors the patient had developed end stage heart failure as sequel of viral infection. He had irreversible heart muscle dysfunction compounded by a major leak in heart valve (severe mitral regurgitation) which entailed a prohibitive risk of open heart surgery and a ubiquitously dismal course. A team of cardiologists led by Admiral Rajat Datta, Air Marshal Prashant Bharadwaj and Air Commodore G Keshavamurthy alleviated the leak in the valve by inserting a device that mitigated the leak by a pinhole intervention through the groin. ” The patient has made a gratifying recovery. ” said a statement.

The Mitra Clip procedure is performed in the cath lab and on average, this procedure takes only 1to3 hours. Mitra Clip is considered a safe procedure with around 95 % success rate. Although it is already being done in private hospitals in India, this is the first case where the procedure has been performed in a government facility. In India Mitra Clip implants cost around 25 lakh rupee. It takes up to a week to recover but in many cases patients return home after 2 to 3 days in the hospital.
