This is likely the first instance where America’s investigative agency—the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)—has conducted such an inquiry and released a report regarding a Punjab Police officer. The officer in question is Inspector Gurjinderjit Singh Nagra, who was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda police station. He has been transferred to Police Lines following the FBI’s revelations which went viral on the internet and social media.

Inspector Nagra is accused of aiding the organized crimal group of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and is under the scanner of the US investigation. Following allegations by the FBI regarding his involvement in running a large-scale racket, the Punjab Police have also initiated an investigation against Nagra. The primary allegation is that Inspector Gurjinderjit Singh Nagra, in collusion with Bhagwanpuria’s crime syndicate, extorted money from victims by threatening to falsely implicate them in murder cases and initiate criminal proceedings.

These allegations are part of three indictments revealed this week under ‘Operation Hardball.’ This is a multinational investigation targeting organized crime groups involved in murder, extortion, drug trafficking, and other crimes across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Viral Video:
Action against Inspector Nagra was taken after a video of an FBI media briefing went viral. In the video, officials alleged that he assisted a network of criminal gangs in extorting $400,000 from a family in Los Angeles. To achieve this, murder charges were leveled against their relatives in India… Threats were made to level false accusations.

It is reported that neither the Punjab government nor the police were officially aware of the matter before the FBI issued its press statement. However, immediately after the video went viral, Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Malik ordered SHO Nagra to be transferred to Police Lines as a precautionary measure.

The SSP stated that, so far, the Punjab Police have received no official confirmation or information regarding the FBI’s alleged claims from either New Delhi or the Punjab government.

Nevertheless, the police have ordered an inquiry against the officer under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar. Officials stated that the facts would become clear only after the investigation is concluded, and further action would be taken based on the inquiry report.

US Claims:
Officials from the US agency state that Gurlal Singh, an alleged member of the Bhagwanpuria gang, provided Nagra with information about a victim in Los Angeles so that false murder charges could be brought against that individual.

According to US media reports, Nagra then allegedly contacted the victim’s father, warning that criminal charges would be filed against the victim unless money was paid. He also threatened to implicate the victim in a murder investigation. The allegations against the police officer are part of a larger case involving 37 accused individuals, who are charged with involvement in three international organized crime syndicates operating across multiple countries.
