At least 8 police personnel including the Deputy Suprintendent of Police and Station House officer were killed during an encounter with criminals in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial town Kanpur in the wee hours of Friday. Atleast seven others were cricially injured. The police team had gone to arrest history-sheeter Vikas Dubey in latter’s residence in Bikaru village on Thursday night but were attacked by criminals who fired indiscriminately killing atleast eight cops . Later they sped away with weapons. Soonafter the police cordoned off the area and started combing operation.
Inspector General confirmed about the encounter and killing of police personnel this morning and claimed to have retaliated and eliminated atleast two assailants .He said that the police personnel gheraoed them in a a nearby village before killing them. The search operation is on.UP DGP( law and order) Prashant Kumar is incharge of this operation.
This is perhaps the first incident in which police has been targetted in any state in the last few years. Vikas Dubey had allegedly killed Santosh Kumar way back in 2003.
List of deceased cops
The deceased cops include a deputy superintendent and three sub-inspectors. They have been identified as CO Devendra Kumar Mishra, SO Mahesh Yadav, Chowki Incharge Anup Kumar, Sub-Inspector Nebulal, Constables Sultan Singh, Rahul, Jitendra and Bablu.
The killing of 8 cops have raised doubts over the manner encounters are planned and executed as this incident has come as a major setback for the state police and the entire police community in India.
Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police H C Awasthi has ordered a high level inquiry into the incident and claimed to have arrested several suspects in the case. He maintained that their top priority is to provide medical treatment to the injured policemen. Arresting the assailants who dared to attack the police personnel and finding out from where the assailants got weapons are other priorities of the investigation. The assailants had meticulously planned the attack on the police from Vikas Dubey’s rooftop after getting a tip off about the proposed action by the police. Dubey’s house looks like a fort where no one is allowed to enter without permission.
Around 60 cases are registered against dreaded criminal Vikas Dubey . He had also won the election of village head and was also a Zila Panchayat member. The police had gone to arrest Vikas Dubey in attempt to murder case. As soon as the police team had reached his residence, the assailants gheraoed cops and opened indiscriminate fire at the police personnel. The criminal and his associates apparantly had got prior information about the police action and planned to block their way. According to sources, residents of Bikaru village have extended support to Vikas Dubey who was a Zila Panchayat member during the BSP rule. Later his wife got elected as Zila Panchayat member as independent. He was reportedly close to BSP but has develped connections in other political parties as well.
