Kargil war hero Lieutenant General Yogesh Kumar Joshi has been appointed the commander of the Northern Command whereas Lt Gen SK Saini will take charge as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Army.

Lt. Gen. Y K Joshi took over the charge.

Lt Gen Y K Joshi, in a recent development, has been assigned the task of the commander of Northern Command which takes care after the borders with China and Pakistan. Lt Gen Joshi has vast experience of anti-terror operations in Kashmir. He will succeeded Lt Gen Ranbir Singh who is going to retires from service on January 31.

Presently serving as the Chief of Staff of the Northern Command of Indian Army, Lt. Gen. Joshi will take charge of the Northern Command as General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) on 1st February.

Meanwhile, Lt Gen CP Mohanty has been appointed the commander of the Southern Command. He succeeded Lt Gen SK Saini who will take charge of Vice Chief of the Indian Army on Saturday. Chair of the Vice Chief is vacant after General Manoj Mukund Naravane was appointed Chief of Army Staff. Lt Gen Mohanty has operational experience along the borders with Pakistan and China. He has served in Assam and has experience in active counter-insurgency operations in State of Assam.
