Justice Surya Kant will be next Chief Justice of India

Current Supreme Court Judge Suryakant will be the next Chief Justice of India. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Justice Suryakant’s appointment as Chief Justice will be effective from November 24. He will be the 53rd Chief Justice of India. Current Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai is retiring on November 23,2025. Justice Suryakant will replace him.

A notification issued by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, stated that in exercise of the powers conferred under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Surya Kant, a Supreme Court Judge, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, 2025.

Who is Justice Surya Kant:
Born on February 10, 1962, in Petwar, a small village in Hisar district of Haryana, Surya Kant grew up in a humble farmer family. He attended the village school until the eighth grade, where there were no benches for students to sit on. Students sat on the floor.

Justice Surya Kant graduated from the Government Postgraduate College, Hisar, in 1981. He received his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. Justice Surya Kant began his legal career as an advocate at the Hisar District Court that same year. He moved to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice law at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Youngest  Advocate General and then Judge:
On July 7, 2000, at the age of 38, he was appointed Advocate General of Haryana. His appointment to this position at such a young age is a record in the legal history of the state. A year later, in March 2001, he was designated as a Senior Advocate.

Justice Surya Kant was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. He continued his academic journey alongside his judicial duties and earned a Master’s degree in Law from Kurukshetra University in 2011, passing the examination with a first-class degree.
