Government of Haryana is in favor of  the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of Aqil Akhter, son of former Punjab Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa and former state minister Razia Sultana. Meanwhile, the head of the Haryana Police Special Investigation Team (SIT), currently investigating the case, stated that security personnel deployed at Aqil’s home have been questioned, and domestic servants are scheduled to be questioned. Police have also recovered the deceased’s cellphone and laptop.

SIT chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Vikram Nehra, briefing reporters in Panchkula, said that their first priority is to know  the cause of Aqil Akhtar’s death. ACP Nehra also said that there is no doubt that Aqil Akhtar and his father, Mohammad Mustafa, had a strained relationship. Aqil had ideological differences with his father and other family members.

He stated that nine Punjab Police personnel were deployed for security at Aqil’s home, who were questioned on October 27th. Following this, the domestic servants are being questioned.

Mohammad Mustafa, a 1985 batch Punjab cadre officer of the Indian Police Service and recipient of the Police Medal for Gallantry, was considered a fierce police officer. His wife, Razia Sultana, was an MLA from Malerkotla of Punjab, and also served as a minister during the Congress regime in Punjab. Mustafa’s 35-year-old married son Aqil Akhter, was found unconscious at his residence in the Mansa Devi Complex in Sector 4, Panchkula, on October 16th. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Aqil Akhter was a drug addict and used to take drugs. Based on this information , the case was initially considered a death due to   drug overdose. After the post-mortem, Aqil’s family took his body for burial at their ancestral village, Harda Kheri, in Saharanpur District of  Uttar Pradesh.

Aqil’s Video:
Meanwhile, an old video of Aqil surfaced, based on which a man named Shamsuddin Chaudhary from Malerkotla filed a police complaint and  raised doubts about the cause of death. Based on this, the police registered an FIR on October 20, 2025, against Mohammad Mustafa, Razia Sultana, Aqil’s sister, and wife under various sections 103 (1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Aqil Akhtar recorded this video and posted it on his social media account on August 27, alleging that his father and his wife were having an illicit relationship and that his entire family, including his mother and sister, were trying to kill or frame him. Although Aqil later deleted the video but in the meantime few  people downloaded it.

Mohammad Mustafa says:
Former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, regarding the FIR filed against him and other family members in the case of his son Aqil Akhtar’s death,  told reporters in Saharanpur on October 21, 2025, that he welcomed the filing of the FIR and wanted the truth to come out through the investigation.

However, Mr. Mustafa completely rejected the allegations made in the FIR. He alleged that it was an attempt to defame his family and tarnish their image in public life. When asked about the recorded video of his son Aqil, he stated that Aqil had been suffering from drug addiction for 18 years and was mentally unstable. Furthermore, he often became violent towards family members. He said that Aqil’s condition had deteriorated to such an extent that he was completely unaware of what he was saying or doing.

Now it is even being said that when Razia Sultana broke her hip a few years ago, it was not an accident but the result of an attack by her son, Aqil Akhtar. Mohammad Mustafa explained  that this incident occurred in 2008 when Aqil tried to attack his wife and Razia Sultana fell down while trying to stop him. Mustafa said that because he lives a public life, the family has been hiding such matters, but now the truth must come out.

Case to CBI:

Since the matter is related to a decorated former senior IPS officer and a family with political background, the case is considered  sensitive. Moreover it has links to Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Hence , the Haryana Police wants the federal agency  Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the case. Seeing the nature of the case, its circumstances and to avoid political controversy , Haryana Government also wants the CBI to investigate it and has  sent the request for the same.  There is no information yet about the Central Government’s approval on this.
