Vikram Srivastava was an IPS of Uttar Pradesh cadre but he made a significant contribution during his stint in various police forces of India. Apart from heading the Central Reserve Police Force, he also headed the Sashastra Seema Bal ( ssb) and the Bureau for Police Research and Development. He retired as the Director General of BPRD in 2012. He also served in the Special Protection Group (SPG) at the Centre.
Vikram Shrivastava was the Director General of CRPF when the deadliest ever Naxal attack on the force took place in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh on 6 April 2010. 75 CRPF personnel lost their lives in this attack. This was a serious blow to the CRPF as well as IPS Vikram Shrivastava. An officer of the Chhattisgarh State Police also lost his life in this attack. Six months after this incident, in October, the Union Home Ministry transferred Vikram Shrivastava to BPRD.
Vikram Shrivastava was remembered as a “visionary” IPS officer. Many officers credit him for strengthening all the forces he led or served in. For personnel deployed in difficult areas, he made special efforts to procure basic necessities such as special clothing for winter, better footwear, food vans to serve hot meals, equipment and gadgets.
While paying tribute to his former chief Vikram Srivastava , the CRPF mentioned him as a visionary leader on a message posted on its X handle @crpfindia –
