Despite the tension among India-US relations over tariff and visa issues, the two countries have signed a defence deal worth $93 million (approximately Rs 825 crore). India will purchase weapons worth this amount from the US under this deal.

Apart from strengthening its lethal capacity this defence deal is also being seen as India’s diplomatic step and an  attempt to strike a balance in its international relations. The deal was done after  a negotiation between the two countries’ defence departments just a few weeks ago. The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency has informed the US Congress that  USA’s Foreign  State Department has approved the deal.

India and the United States have been defence partners for the past few years. Last month, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with US Secretary of Defence (Secretary of War) Pete Hegseth, and a 10-year defense framework was signed between the two countries. India decided to purchase such a large quantity of weapons from the United States under this partnership.

What weapons did India purchase from the United States:
A detailed list of the weapons and their price,  under the deal ,  was also shared to the US Congress. The Javelin missile system is key among these weapons. List includes 100 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles, 25 lightweight command launch units, a ‘fly-to-buy’ round, training support, simulation rounds, spare parts, and lifetime support.

India will also acquire Excalibur projectiles from the United States. This includes related fire-control components, propellants, technical assistance, logistical support.
