Indeed it is shocking. Entire police fraternity and bureaucrats are shocked after getting this sad information. One of the senior most Indian Police Service officers and Police Chief of Tripura Aurag Dhankar was found dead in his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Doctors at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital declared him dead at 12.48 pm. They did not disclose the cause of the death . But according to different media reports , Director General of Triputra Anurag Dhankar committted suicide.
According to doctors IPS Anurag Dhankar was brought to hospital in dead condition. Even then they tried their best to revive him but all in vain.
Anurag Dhankar was an officer of the 1994 batch of Indian Police Service. He took charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura in May 2025, succeeding Amitabh Ranjan.
Before becoming the police chief of the Tripura state , he served as Director General (Intelligence) in Tripura and had a distinguished career with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled several high-profile investigations during his tenure.
Known for his professional approach and extensive policing experience, IPS Anurag Dhankar was regarded as one of the senior-most IPS officers in the state.
Preliminary reports suggest that the senior IPS officer may have died by suicide. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be officially confirmed, Secretary to the Chief Minister Kiran Gitte said.
Senior doctor Dr Pradip Bhowmik told the media that Anurag Dhankar was brought to the hospital at around 12 pm with no pulse, blood pressure, temperature or other vital signs. Still, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated in the emergency unit. Despite all our efforts doctors could not revive him.
When asked about the cause of death, Dr Bhowmik said it could be determined only after a post-mortem examination. But according to few media reports DGP Dhankar committed suicide.
Anurag Dhankar belonged to Biharipur village of District Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. Tripura government declared state mourning on July21.
