IPS B. Shivadhar Reddy is new police chief of Telangana

The Telangana government has appointed senior Indian Police Service officer B. Shivadhar Reddy as the new Director General of Police of Telangana. Mr. Shivadhar Reddy is a 1994 batch IPS officer and previously served as the Director General of Intelligence in Telangana.

According to an official order issued by Telangana Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao on Friday (September 26, 2025), Mr. Reddy has been transferred to the post of Director General of Police (Coordination) and also given “full additional charge” of the post of Director General of Police (head of the police force) of Telangana. He will replace retired DGP Jitendra.

Practicing as advocate:
Born in Hyderabad and a native of Tool-e-Kalan (Peddatundla) village in Ibrahimpatnam Mandal of Rangareddy district, B. Shivadhar Reddy completed his education in Hyderabad and graduated in law from Osmania University. He also practiced as a lawyer for some time. He subsequently joined the Indian Police Service in 1994 after passing the Union Public Service Commission examination. Mr. Reddy was allotted the Andhra Pradesh cadre. After the state’s division in 2014, he was transferred to the Telangana cadre.

Mr. Reddy began his career as Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Chintapalli subdivisions of Visakhapatnam district between 1996 and 1998. Later, as Additional Superintendent of Police from 1998 to 2000, he served in Greyhound and then Bellampalli in Adilabad district.

B. Shivadhar Reddy served as Superintendent of Police in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur districts. In Hyderabad, he held several positions, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in 2004 and Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Zone, from 2007 to 2008. He was also posted to Kosovo under the United Nations Mission.

Telangana’s First Intelligence Chief
B. Shivadhar Reddy’s senior appointments included Chief of the Special Intelligence Branch; Additional Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and later Director. Mr. Reddy also served as the Police Commissioner of Visakhapatnam. In 2014, IPS B. Shivadhar Reddy became the first Intelligence Chief in Telangana. He was reinstated in this position in 2023. He was promoted to the rank of Director General in 2024.
