Mr Gupta, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service officer, was serving as the acting Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh since February 1, 2025. Recently, the state government appointed him as the full-time Director General on the basis of the approved panel list of the UPSC. Mr Gupta has been appointed as the police chief for two years from the date of assuming office.
Traditional rituals were followed at his swearing-in ceremony at the Police Headquarters, where priests offered special prayers in the DGP’s chamber. Mr. Gupta while speaking to the media on the occasion, thanked Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the police force. He said, “I thank the Chief Minister for reposing faith in me. I will work with a focus on maintaining law and order and ensuring transparent, accountable policing, especially for the weaker sections of society.”

After this, he did his BSc and Law degree from Jammu University.
