The senior most Director General of Police in Tamilnadu , Braj Kishore Ravi has applied voluntarily for premature retirement. His planning is to enter politics by joining the Congress Party. Braj Kishore Ravi, is the second highest officer in his cadre after Sanjay Arora who is a 1989 batch Tamil Nadu cadre officer of the Indian Police Service and serving as the Police Commissioner of Delhi.
Braj Kishore Ravi, who applied for voluntary retirement three months before his retirement, has served as Director General (Vigilance) in Tamil Nadu Police. The retirement date of IPS Braj Kishore Ravi is 31 December 2023.
News related to his application for VRS and intend to join politics have been coming for two days in local and national news media published and broadcast from Chennai. the capital city of Tamilnadu. According to local media , a senior officer posted at the police headquarters has confirmed this news. It is also being told that IPS Braj Kishore Ravi, a native of Saharsa District of Bihar, intends to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from his state on Congress ticket.
This is not the first case of officers of both the services, be it Indian Administrative Service or Indian Police Service, going into electoral politics in India. But the trend of joining politics by resigning from service or taking premature retirement is now becoming more visible. This is the second case that has come to light recently.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir cadre IPS officer Basant Rath had expressed the same intention while applying for the VRS last year. Basant Rath, an IPS of 2000 batch , was under suspension for the last three years. Recently the Central Government has dismissed Basant Rath from the police service . Although Basant Rath is native of Odisha, he intends to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Kashmir on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.
