DGP Anurag Dhankhar cremated with state honors in Baghpat

Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar was cremated with full state honors in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday. His son, Abhishek Dhankhar, performed the last rites (lighting the funeral pyre) around 11:30 AM at the cremation ground near Bawli Chungi in Baraut, located on the Delhi-Saharanpur National Highway. Prior to this, a large number of people participated in his funeral procession. At the cremation ground, floral tributes were paid to his mortal remains and was given the Guard of Honor.

Dignitaries and common citizens in funeral procession:
DGP Anurag Dhankhar’s funeral procession covered a distance of approximately one kilometer from his ancestral home. A large number of people—including local residents, police officers, public representatives, and members of social organizations—gathered to pay their final respects.

Tributes were paid by various figures, including former MP Satyapal Singh, Additional Director General (ADG) of the Meerut Zone (UP Police) Bhanu Bhaskar, and UP Minister of State Krishnapal Malik, alongside leaders from various political parties and representatives of social organizations.

Questions raised by villagers:
During the cremation, the large number of villagers present harbored questions regarding DGP Anurag Dhankhar’s death. They were astonished and found it difficult to comprehend how such a senior and experienced police officer could take a step like suicide. They were reluctant to accept the suicide theory, primarily because the Tripura Police administration has not yet clearly explained why the officer holding the state’s highest police rank chose to end his life. Demanding a high-level inquiry into the matter by the Central and Tripura governments, the villagers said that the circumstances surrounding his death must be clarified.

It is noteworthy that DGP Anurag Dhankhar was found  dead in his office at the Tripura Police Headquarters on Monday (July 20, 2026). Preliminary investigations by the Tripura Police indicated that it is  a case of suicide.  However, the investigation is ongoing, and the final findings are yet to be revealed.

Following the post-mortem, his mortal remains were brought to Delhi via air ambulance on Tuesday and subsequently brought by road to his ancestral home in Baraut, Baghpat.
