
An Indian Air Force Sukhoi fighter jet (Su-30 MKI) crashed in Assam in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. The fighter jet took off from the Jorhat airbase yesterday morning. The aircraft was on a training flight.
An Indian Air Force spokesperson said that the Su-30 MKI fighter jet took off from Jorhat at 7 a.m. on Thursday (March 5). It was a training flight. The aircraft crashed in the Karbi Anglong area, about 60 kilometers away. Contact with the plane was lost at 7:42 am.
The plane crashed is a dense forest area. Local residents said they heard a loud explosion around 7:30 am.
The Su-30 MKI is a long-range, multi-role, two-seater fighter aircraft manufactured by the Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi. In India, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) manufactures it under license for the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force has over 260 Sukhoi fighter jets.
A Sukhoi fighter plane crashed in Nashik district of Maharashtra, in June 2024. Another Sukhoi-30 jet crashed in January 2023 after taking off from Gwalior Airbase.
