A car bomb exploded at a police post in northwestern Pakistan, followed by intense gunfire that left several police personnel dead and others injured. The death toll among the police personnel is reported to exceed 20. This police check post  is located in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.

An organization calling itself ‘Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan’ has claimed responsibility for the attack. This organization is a coalition of armed groups. There are also reports suggesting that the attackers used drones during this incident.

Police officer Zahid Khan told a news agency  that a suicide bomber, along with several militants, detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a security checkpoint. He stated that immediately following this, the sounds of multiple explosions were heard, and the security checkpoint collapsed under the impact of the blasts.

Photographs emerging after the late-night attack on Saturday show that the police checkpost had been completely reduced to rubble. Bricks, charred debris, and the mangled wreckage of vehicles lay scattered all around. This incident is being described as a suicide attack in which an explosives-laden vehicle was rammed into the police post.

According to reports citing the news agency *Reuters*, security officials stated that following the bomb blast, the police personnel were subjected to an ambush. These officers were rushing toward the scene of the incident to provide assistance. When reinforcements were dispatched to assist the police, terrorists ambushed them, resulting in the loss of several lives.

Pakistan has consistently accused Afghanistan of harboring armed groups. It asserts that these groups used  Afghan soil to plot attacks within Pakistan. The Taliban has denied these allegations, maintaining that the ongoing armed insurgency in Pakistan is an internal matter.

The most intense fighting in years erupted between these two sides—once allies, now adversaries. During these clashes, Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghanistan; Islamabad stated that these strikes specifically targeted militant hideouts.

Islamabad accuses Kabul of harboring armed groups that use Afghan territory to orchestrate attacks within Pakistan. The Taliban has refuted these allegations, asserting that the armed insurgency currently underway in Pakistan is an internal affair of that country.

The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). and its allied terrorist factions have carried out similar attacks in the past. The Pakistani Taliban is a distinct entity, yet it maintains ideological ties with the Afghan Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan in 2021.
