Surajkund Craft Fair swing accident: Haryana Police SI lost life while trying to save people

Jagdish Prasad, a Sub Inspector with Haryana Police , lost his life while trying to save people in the swing collapsed accident  at the Surajkund International Crafts Fair in Faridabad on Saturday, was about to retire next month. The Haryana Government has announced martyr status for him. Jagdish Prasad was a resident of a village in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, and had served in the police force for 36 years.

Jagdish Prasad’s bereaved family includes his wife and three children: two sons and a daughter. All three are students. The State  Government has announced that his family will get Rs.1 crore and employment for one of his dependents in the government department. 58-year-old Jagdish Prasad was also honored by the Governor with a Police Medal in 2019-2020. He joined the Haryana Armed Police in 1989 and was due to retire in March.

Women police personnel injured:
When a swing collapsed at the Surajkund Mela around 6 p.m. on Saturday, 11 of the 19 people reportedly riding on it were injured. SI Jagdish Prasad immediately reached the spot and began evacuating them. Meanwhile, another part of the swing fell , causing serious injuries to him. Two women constables, assisting him in the rescue operation,  were also injured. Jagdish Prasad was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He could not be saved.

Case and arrest:
The government has ordered an investigation into the accident whereas Haryana Police have registered an FIR under Section 105 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested two accused – Mohammad Shakir and Nitesh. Mohammad Shakir, a resident of Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, is said to be the owner of Himachal Fun Care, the company that holds the license for the swing. Nitesh is his associate, a resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Investigation underway:
Teams from the government administration and tourism department inspected the spot on Monday. The area where the pendulum swing was installed in the entertainment zone of the 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Craft Festival has been cordoned off. The rest of the area will be reopened only after recommendations from a committee led by ADC Satbir Singh Mann and technical experts. Orders have been given to reopen the remaining nearby food stalls. The exact cause of the accident is unknown.
