
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need to change public perception of the police, especially among the youth, by promoting efficiency, sensitivity, and accountability. He emphasized the need to strengthen urban policing, revitalize the tourist police, and increase public awareness about the new Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (indian criminal code) , Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam ( Indian Evidence Act) and Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita ( Indian Civil Protection Code), which have replaced colonial-era criminal laws.
Prime Minister Modi directed the police and broader administrations of states and union territories to adopt innovative strategies to integrate uninhabited islands, effectively utilize the integrated databases under the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), and connect these systems through artificial intelligence to generate actionable intelligence. He encouraged universities and educational institutions to conduct case studies on the use of forensics in police investigations, stating that better application of forensics would strengthen the criminal justice system.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of establishing a network for regular monitoring of banned organizations, ensuring the holistic development of areas free from Left Wing Extremism, and adopting innovative models to strengthen coastal security. He stated that combating drug abuse requires a holistic government approach, combining enforcement, rehabilitation, and community-level interventions.
The conference witnessed in-depth discussions on a wide range of national security issues. Discussions included the long-term roadmap for policing towards Vision 2047, emerging trends in counter-terrorism and counter-radicalization, leveraging technology to enhance women’s safety, strategies to bring back Indian fugitives living abroad, and strengthening forensic capabilities to ensure effective investigations and prosecutions.
PM Modi urged police officials to strengthen effective disaster management mechanisms for cyclones, floods, and other natural emergencies, including the current situation of Cyclone Ditwa. He emphasized that proactive planning, prompt coordination, rapid response, and a holistic government approach are essential to ensure the safety of lives and minimum disruption during such events.
The Prime Minister presented the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau. He also presented awards to three cities for their best performance in urban policing. This award has been instituted for the first time to encourage innovation and improvement in urban policing.
