Special Commissioner Shalini Singh examines the records of the police station.

It is not an easy task to choose the ‘top three’ among more than 200 police stations in Delhi. Officers of all ranks from bottom to top are involved in this interesting exercise. First, each district selects two best police stations and sends them to an officer of the rank of Deputy Commissioner (DCP). After this the concerned DCP send the same to the Joint Commissioner in charge of its range. Joint commissioners of 6 ranges and 1 transport range select the names of 2-2 best police stations from their range and send them to the committee headed by the Special Commissioner, in which the remaining two members are police officers of the rank of Joint Commissioner. In this way, the list of those 14 police stations which were considered capable in every way reaches the committee. Now those top three police stations have to elect this committee.

Presently 1996 batch IPS officer Shalini Singh is the head of this committee and two other members are Joint Commissioner OP Mishra and Dheeraj Kumar. This three member team inspected the recently renovated Civil Lines police station in North Delhi. Almost adjacent to the Delhi Assembly, this police station is also close to the Raj Bhavan, another Delhi Power Center.

Special Commissioner Shalini Singh said that every aspect is looked into to select the best police station. Maintenance of the building, cleanliness, facilities for policemen and visitors are the basic things. Documenting and computer records of the police station, maintenance of weapons and vehicles, graph of crime, their investigation, methods of investigation, in how many cases the success achieved in getting the criminal convicted, and the method adopted for the prevention of crimes, etc. are also considered. . Along with this, special attention is on what special initiative has been taken by that police station which has proved to be effective. Whether this initiative is going to improve the routine work of the police or it has been done for the betterment of any part of the society.

IPS Shalini Singh , in this context , cited the example of a police station in South Delhi where the SHO has organized a traditional panchayat , as held in the countryside , to resolve issues that create tension or estrangement among the people living in the same locality. Some respected and influential people are members of such informal committees they help in solving such issues. This not only maintains harmony among the local residents. Moreover , there is no possibility of the situation worsening due to tension. In such a situation, the burden of unnecessary work on the police does not increase.
