A rare coincidence when wife shook hands and gave responsibility to IPS husband

IPS officer CD Karthikeyan Gokulchandran was welcomed by his wife at Kullu as soon as he reached there to take charge as Superintendent of Police at District HeadQuarters. Wife shook hands with the husband, offered a chair and handed over the responsibility wishing him a successful tenure. Perhaps these were the rare moments in police history , captured on camera for the first time when the wife is handing over command to her husband. Such a beautiful and rare coincidence has never been seen or heard of. The coincidence happened recently when many police officers were transferred simultaneously in Himachal Pradesh.The wife is none other than IPS officer Sakshi Verma, the outgoing SP of the district.

Himachal Government has transferred 12 officers of Indian Police Service (IPS) and 16 from Himachal Pradesh Police Service (HPPS) posted in the state. The names of IPS officer Sakshi Verma and her husband IPS CD Karthikeyan Gokulchandran were also in the list of those officers.
According to these transfer orders SPs of four districts of Himachal Pradesh were also changed .  Sakshi Verma, posted in Kullu district, is transferred to the post of Superintendent of Police (SP) of Mandi District. Whereas her husband CD Karthikeyan Gokulchandran is transferred as SP, Bilaspur.

Resident of Rajpura, Punjab, 35 year old Sakshi Verma became IPS at the age of 25 after passing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination in 2014. Before becoming SP of Kullu, she was posted at the capital Shimla. After her action against drug smugglers, people started calling her Lady Singham. IPS Sakshi Verma, who took great interest in women’s welfare and women’s safety, gained more fame due to the services she started like Gudiya Helpline, Shakti Button and Hoshiar Singh.

Now when we talk about her IPS husband CD Karthikeyan Gokulchandran, he is also no less interesting. IPS Karthikeyan is also an officer of the same year 2014 batch but from Kerala cadre. But when the marriage took place, both had different state cadres. In such a situation, it was becoming difficult to live together. There is a provision in the Indian Police Service (Cadre) Rules – 1954 that either one of the spouses can get the cadre of their state changed and transferred to the cadre of their life partner on the basis of marriage. The central government can do this if both the states agree. Under the same rule, IPS CD Karthikeyan got himself transferred in 2019 to Himachal Pradesh cadre, which is his wife’s cadre state.

IPS CD Karthikeyan has also been the SP of Hamirpur and Una districts of Himachal Pradesh. Apart from this, he has also served in other units ,including AIG of Shimla,  after coming from Kerala Police. IPS Karthikeyan is fond of music as well as fitness.

Superintendent of Police (SP Cyber-Crime) Rohit Malpani has been posted in Junga as the commandant of the 1st battalion of armed police. Kullu SP Sakshi Verma has been made the SP of Mandi and Bilaspur SP CD Karthikeyan Gokulchandran has been made the SP of Kullu. SP (Law and Order) Srishti Pandey will take over as SP of Kinnaur. Meanwhile, Kinnaur SP Vivek Chehal has been made the SP of Bilaspur in place of CD Karthikeyan.
