The appointment order was issued on Wednesday by Dr. Sumita Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department.
Following the Supreme Court’s directives regarding the appointment of the police chief, the Haryana government had sent a panel of five senior IPS officers of DGP rank to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A meeting of the UPSC selection committee was held in New Delhi on Wednesday, in which Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi and Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Sumita Mishra also participated as members.
After the meeting, the UPSC sent a final panel of three senior officers to the Haryana government. This included the names of Shatrujit Kapoor of the 1990 batch, Ajay Singhal of the 1992 batch, and Alok Mittal of the 1993 batch. According to the Supreme Court’s directives, the state government has the right to select and appoint one officer from this panel as the DGP. Using this authority, the government handed over the command of the state police to Ajay Singhal.
Leadership changed after controversies:
Despite completing his two-year tenure as DGP, IPS Shatrujeet Kapoor was retained as the police chief by the Haryana Government. However, the situation changed after the suicide case of ADGP rank officer Y Puran Kumar. In his final note, he had named several IPS and IAS officers, including Shatrujit Kapoor. Following this, Kapoor was sent on a long leave. When his leave ended on December 14, the government relieved him of his duties as DGP and appointed OP Singh as the acting DGP.
