Controversy in UP: Police ‘Guard of Honour’ to religious preacher, DGP seeks explanation

A video of police giving a ‘Guard of Honour’ to a religious preacher in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh went viral. This resulted into controversy and hence the matter  prompted  Director General of Police Rajiv Krishna to seek an explanation from Superintendent of Police Ram Nayan Singh. The preacher, Pundarik Goswami, was invited to deliver a sermon to the police personnel. He was given a salute and honor as if he is a high-ranking official or a person holding a constitutional post.

The video is said to be from November, but it went viral recently, bringing the incident to the attention of many. The incident, which violated police protocol norms , led to considerable criticism of the police, and also sparked political controversy. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad have criticized the incident. Seeing the matter escalating, DGP Rajiv Krishna has now sought an explanation from the District Superintendent of Police.

The UP Police said in a post on the social media platform X, “The Director General of Police has taken cognizance of the unauthorized use of the police parade ground during an event held in Bahraich district. The use of the police parade ground is mandatory only for police training, discipline, and official ceremonies as per the prescribed standards. In view of the violation of the prescribed standards, an explanation has been sought from the concerned Superintendent of Police.”

The whole matter:
The incident is said to have taken place in the first week of November. In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, religious preacher Pundarik Goswami was given a Guard of Honour. He was given a full parade salute. Moreover, in the viral video, SP Ram Nayan Singh himself was seen leading the parade. Not only that, a red carpet was laid out to welcome him. A reel was also made during the event. Furthermore, the Pundrik Goswami addressed the police personnel while officers were standing on a podium. The reception for Pundarik Goswami was so grand that reels and videos were made of it.  Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar have questioned the government’s working style based on the viral videos.

After the video went viral, the DGP has sought an explanation from Bahraich SP Ram Nayan Singh. Currently, people are giving different arguments on social media regarding this matter. After questions were raised about the entire incident, the Bahraich police issued a clarification stating that some police officers were experiencing mental depression during training. There had been incidents of resignations. To maintain morale and alleviate depression, the preacher was invited to give a motivational lecture.

Who is SP Ram Nayan Singh?
59-year-old Ram Nayan Singh is a Provincial Police Service (PPS) officer who was promoted to IPS officer in 2016. Originally from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Ram Nayan Singh got his first posting as Superintendent of Police in Bahraich district in 2024. He is also scheduled to retire in August 2026. Ram Nayan Singh, who is known to be religious, is said to have a deep devotion to Pundarik Goswami. It is possible that he organized this event due to this emotional attachment.
